JuJu Watkins lit up the Crypto.com Arena as the Los Angeles Sparks hosted the Minnesota Lynx. The USC Trojan's guard donned an off-white t-shirt with a glimmering golden necklace as she sat front row to support the home team, who lost 82-67.
Unlike her previous lively sighting with Charisma Osborne, Watkins displayed a contrasting demeanor this time around. She maintained a stoic poker face until the cameras turned away.
Despite Paige Bueckers being projected as the first pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, many experts believe JuJu Watkins to be the best player in the women's collegiate circuit for the coming season.
As a freshman, Watkins poured 32 points in her college debut, breaking a 32-year-old program record. She followed it with a double-double less than three weeks later (31 points and 12 rebounds) before topping it with two back-to-back 30-point games. Nevertheless, her most remarkable feat came in February, when Watkins stormed for 51 points and 11 rebounds over Stanford.
With that, JuJu Watking made an NCAA record for the most points ever by a freshman, breaking a four-decade-long record and ranked second on the season's scoring leaderboard.
JuJu Watkins wants to be on the 2028 Team USA roster
Even before she begins her WNBA career, JuJu Watkins has her sights set on reaching the Team USA women's main Olympic team. As soon as she finishes college, she hopes to represent her country at the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in her hometown of Los Angeles.
“That’s definitely a long-term goal of mine when I get done with my college career,” Watkins said in an interview on Tuesday. “Definitely something I’m looking forward to and having the chance to do that in my city would definitely be a dream come true.”
Given the projections around her future, it will not be a surprise if Watkins dons the national jersey in 2028. Moreover, her international experience from age-restricted Team USA stints will be handy.
JuJu Watkins led the USA with 20 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.2 steals to a 6-0 cruise to the gold medal in the 2021 U16 FIBA Americas. She posted a double-double in her debut game and 28 points in the finale. Moreover, she also helped USA Basketball garner gold in the 2022 U17 World Cup.
For now, Watkins will look to top her first-year averages in her sophomore season. She averaged 27.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.6 blocks before falling to UConn in Elite Eight.
