Duke's locker room erupted in celebration after Cooper Flagg delivered a historic performance in their ACC matchup against Notre Dame at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday.
The freshman powered the No. 4 Blue Devils to victory with an impressive 42 points, seven assists, six rebounds and one steal.
A video shared by Duke Men’s Basketball’s official account captured the joyous scene, as Flagg was greeted by teammates who doused him with water to celebrate.
Flagg made college basketball history by scoring 42 points on an exceptional 11-of-14 shooting, setting a new ACC freshman single-game scoring record. He became the first Duke player to score 40 points since J.J. Redick in 2006.
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer praised Flagg's performance, calling it an “all-time special” effort, noting how the freshman delivered clutch baskets to propel the team to victory.
Flagg is averaging 19.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists this season while shooting 47.9% from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc.
As his standout freshman season continues, Flagg remains a strong contender to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Teammates Step Up in Duke's Win Over Notre Dame
While Cooper Flagg’s record-breaking performance grabbed the spotlight, his teammates also delivered standout contributions in the victory over Notre Dame.
Khaman Maluach had a career night, scoring 19 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting and hitting 7-of-8 free throws. The freshman also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, recording his second double-double of the season. Maluach had previously set his career high with 17 points against UIW.
Kon Knueppel added 13 points, knocking down two 3-pointers and going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. He also tallied five assists and has now made multiple 3-pointers in each of Duke's last five games.
Starters Tyrese Proctor and Sion James combined for seven points, six rebounds, and four assists, while contributions from the bench came primarily from Mason Gillis and Patrick Ngonngba II, who combined for five points and five rebounds.
Duke set a new mark under head coach Jon Scheyer by shooting 30-of-35 (.857) from the free-throw line, establishing records for both free throws made and attempted in a game.
The Blue Devils came out strong, opening the game with a 14-0 scoring run, their largest to start a game this season. Notre Dame was held scoreless for the first 4:42 and didn’t make a field goal until 5:17 into the contest.
After their impressive showing, Duke looks to extend their win streak to 11 games as they continue their three-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting Miami at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
