Dawn Staley is in Paris now for the 2024 Summer Olympics and has taken on the role of Team USA's cheerleader. She has been following multiple sports, documenting them on social media, and the latest is gymnastics.
On Sunday, Sunisa Lee won bronze in the uneven bars final, and coach Staley congratulated her on X:
"Congrats @sunisalee_ on yet another medal … we see you. We approve. And we love you for it!!"
This is not her first time giving Lee a shout-out. Last week, she was in the arena for the all-around gymnastics final and went on X, asking officials to medal her already.
When the gymnast replied that she was "fangirling," Staley commented:
"That’s me with you! Super proud of you! Love that medal smile!! Keep me great, SUNI!!!"
While she's throwing the spotlight on many sports, Staley is also following the women's and men's basketball games.
After the men's team took a huge win over Serbia, the coach complimented the team, especially role players like Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White for fully taking on their responsibility.
"They're players who will not complain," Staley said (via NBC Olympics). "They are high-performing, low-maintenance, and that's what you want. You've got your superstars. But these are the players who are starring in their rotation and their playing time."
Dawn Staley is star-struck after meeting Tom Brady
On Sunday, Dawn Staley met NFL legend and Patriots Hall of Famer Tom Brady and recounted her experience later on X. She wrote:
"Yall I can not lie to you …. don’t you ever ever look directly into @TomBrady eyes … this man is seriously beautiful. And I shook his hand ... the Super Bowlssss hand. And the hand was just as gorgeous. Ok I’m done but for real."
Dawn Staley was a part of the presidential delegation that accompanied the USA's First Lady, Jill Biden, for the opening ceremony. Since her arrival in Paris, Staley has also been participating in discussions about the upliftment of sports, especially women's sports and its athletes.
While this is her first Olympics as part of a delegation, Staley has participated in four earlier games as a player and as a coach. She won gold with Team USA in the 1996 (Atlanta), 2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens) Olympic games. In the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, Staley coached the USA to a gold as well.
