The relationship between LSU's Flau'jae Johnson and WNBA rookie Angel Reese, who were once teammates, has been a topic of discussion recently. Not even a week after Reese revealed the love lost between the two, Johnson has now shared her side of the story.
While on the promotional tour of their docuseries "The Money Game," in New York, which features both Flau'jae and Angel, Johnson also gave an exclusive interview with the New York Post Sports on Tuesday.
During the interview, the host asked her about Reese's last week's remarks and how things stand between them. Flau'jae Johnson completely agreed with her former Tigers teammate's sentiment regarding their current relationship status.
"Yeah, me and Angel, we aren’t as close as we used to be," Flau'jae said. "But I still support her a thousand percent. I was proud of her, just being in the W[NBA] and breaking records.
"A lot of people said that she wouldn’t go to the W[NBA] and do all those things, and they kinda hated on her. But I kinda knew that because I'd see it every day in practice, and I see the mentality that she has. So, it’s been dope [to watch her]."
Last week on Reese's first episode of her podcast "Unapologetically Angel," she spilled the beans about her friendship with Flau'jae.
"I still support Flau'jae. We aren't as close as we used to be," Reese said. "And there's no hard feelings or anything, but we aren't as close as we used to be. That's why people always expect us to still be posting each other and stuff like that. But, like, we aren't as close.
"It happens. You don't have the best relationships with everybody and don't always continue relationships with people. So I wish her the best always, and I'm always gonna support her."
Flau'jae Johnson and Angel Reese played together for two seasons
In the 2022-23 season, LSU signed Maryland sophomore Angel Reese from the transfer portal and a four-star recruit, Flau'jae Johnson.
In their first season in Baton Rouge, they formed a dynamic duo, guiding coach Kim Mulkey's team to the NCAA championship title. Johnson won the SEC Freshman of the Year, while Reese was crowned NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, along with many other accolades. The two also became close friends off the court.
However, after the 2023-24 college basketball season ended, Reese declared for the WNBA draft and was picked by the Chicago Sky. Meanwhile, Flau'jae Johnson is set to play another year at college and has her sights on being the top pick in the 2026 draft.
