Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks enjoyed an incredible 2024 as they won the national championship in April and are now back in a bid to repeat it. With the new year coming up, Staley sent special greetings to WIS News 10 and the Gamecocks fans.
In the video released on Monday, the three-time title-winning coach said:
"We enjoy our incredible season. Last year it surely was an uncommon favorite for us all. We are an uncommon team, we have uncommon fams we have uncommon coverage, it's not like that everywhere you go across this country, specially when it comes to women's basketball, but you make us special.
Dawn Staley also mentioned that with his 2024-25 season, South Carolina is aiming for consistency:
"If we can repeat the energy and effort that went into us having the type of perfect season, although we don't have a perfect record that doesn't mean it won't be a perfect season for us. So thank you for your continued support and love. We pour that right back at you we hope that everyone has a prosperous and a Gamecock-filled 2025. Go Gamecocks!"
Dawn Staley sets expectations for South Carolina's SEC run
After the perfect run from last season, South Carolina maintained it for the first five games this season before losing to UCLA. The Gamecocks have since bounced back and are on a seven-game winning streak. Dawn Staley's team began their conference games on Sunday with a 93-47 win over the Wofford Terriers.
Before the tip-off, Staley shared her expectations for her team as they take on the competitive teams in the Southeastern Conference.
"I just want us to play to our standard that's on both sides of the ball," Staley said.
"Unwilling to give up easy baskets, willing to be disciplined on offense, get some reversals. Play selfless basketball and find the best shot on the floor," she added.
Some of the Gamecocks players have struggled with inconsistent performance this season. The team has also lacked a proper center since Kamilla Cardoso left for the WNBA in May. While Chloe Kitts and Sania Feagin have stepped up, the holes in their defense have been apparent.
South Carolina is set to take on the Missouri Tigers next on Thursday.
