UCLA Bruins basketball coach Mick Cronin expressed displeasure about his team's travel schedule following their game against Washington Huskies on Jan. 25.
The coach voiced his frustration during the post-match press conference following their win against the Huskies.
“All I know is we’re at SC Monday, correct? So, we’ve got to get home. We’re going to get home at two in the morning, three in the morning. We should’ve just had this game at midnight. I mean, when you sell your soul to television, that’s just the way it is. That’s college sports. We’ve sold our soul to television," explained Mick in a YouTube video via ON3.
Cronin discussed the travel struggles his team is facing, expressing frustration about the challenges of managing their schedule.
According to Cronin, the root of the problem is that college basketball has become too focused on television. He feels the sport has "sold its soul" to TV, leading to difficult travel schedules like the one his team is dealing with.
UCLA will have an easier schedule in the coming weeks, with three out of their next four games at home. The one away game is against their local rival, USC. However, Coach Cronin believes that even this schedule favors USC more than UCLA.
“So, we’ll get home in the middle of the night, get some rest, and prepare as best can to play a team that played on Wednesday. Probably took Thursday off and is focused on us while we’re up here."
"So, there’s a lot of inequities in this thing," Cronin said, "I’m sure at some point later in the year, it’ll go our way. I haven’t found that yet, but I’m hoping. You would think law of averages. But great win for us.”
Cronin led UCLA to victory
The UCLA Bruins coach has played a major role in the team's success this season, with their recent win coming against the Washington Huskies (60-65). They won both halves (32-36, 28-29) to extend their winning streak to three games.
Cronin's team now has a record of 17 wins and eight losses in 25 games this season, placing UCLA seventh in the Big Ten Conference.
They will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games when they face the USC Trojans on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
