Dick Vitale declared cancer-free, set to return announcing Booth
Legendary ESPN college basketball announcer Dick Vitale shared heartwarming news on Wednesday, announcing that his vocal cords were cancer-free. This milestone not only marked the end of a grueling health battle but also paved the way for his much-anticipated return to courtside commentary.
“Just had a scope of my vocal cords and I was very emotional with the great report by Dr. ZEITELS,” Vitale tweeted. “He said the vocal cords are cancer free and he feels I can return to my love of being at courtside for ESPN.”
The announcement came after years of health challenges for the iconic broadcaster. Vitale has battled melanoma, lymphoma and most recently, laryngeal cancer, which temporarily sidelined him from his role as one of college basketball’s most enthusiastic and recognizable voices.
In December, Vitale declared he was cancer-free, an announcement that brought joy to fans and the sports community. However, uncertainty lingered about whether his vocal cords would heal enough for him to return to broadcasting. Wednesday’s update has put those concerns to rest, confirming that he's ready to resume his role courtside.
