Despite leading by as many as 15 points in the second half, the South Carolina Gamecocks could not get the job done on Wednesday. They narrowly lost 70-69 against the No. 5-ranked Florida Gators after senior Will Richard's go-ahead layup with 4.8 seconds remaining gave his team their first and only lead of the SEC game.
Among the heartbroken Gamecocks home crowd was women's basketball coach Dawn Staley, who made headlines of her own from the stands. She was spotted sporting a gigantic South Carolina-branded hat throughout the conference fixture. The cap led to reactions from spectators, especially the Florida faithful, for its over-the-top nature.
"What the f*ck is on Dawn’s head?," one fan asked.
"THE FLORIDA GATORS NOW LEGALLY OWN DAWN STALEY'S BIG-A*S HAT," a user claimed.
"Dawn Staley, such a look at me type of person," another user wrote.
"LMAOOO take yo big head and hat a*s home Dawn Staley!!!!," a user replied with laughing emojis.
"That was so funny to watch. I especially enjoyed Dawn Staley acting like a clown the entire game and then having to suck on that loss," another shared with alligator and laughing emojis.
But, through all of the comments concerning Staley's choice of headwear, many adored the 54-year-old's look and reactions from the sidelines.
"I absolutely love that ridiculous hat," one fan said.
"Can we get a Dawn Staley live reaction @SECNetwork," another fan said with laughing emojis.
Get in that locker, Dawn Staley," a fan posted.
As the men's side suffered their ninth overall loss of the campaign, Staley will look to ensure her women's team won't succumb to a similar result against the LSU Tigers on Friday.
South Carolina Gamecocks men's basketball continues their worst SEC start in program history
With the loss, the South Carolina Gamecocks men's basketball team added defeat No. 6 in this year's conference play. The unranked squad remains winless in the SEC, knotting up the program's worst start in the 2013-2014 season as they fall to the bottom of the standings.
On Saturday the Gamecocks will have the opportunity to either get their first division win of the campaign or record the most SEC losses without a win in program history at 0-7. The 14th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs will visit the Colonial Life Arena where the fixture is set to take place at 1 p.m. ET.
