“What if they are not good enough?”: Geno Auriemma uses Breanna Stewart as an example to emphasise on process oriented approach

Geno Auriemma has evaluated many talented players over multiple decades of coaching the UConn women's basketball team. His success would not have been possible if he didn't take a certain approach to get players to invest in the process.

Auriemma went over his approach in a episode of "What Drives Winning" uploaded to YouTube on Dec. 8, explaining how he filtered the players who showed the dedication to get better and win like Breanna Stewart from the players who did not have the drive to reach their potential.

"What if they're not good enough? What if? What if the person we're talking about there is Breanna Stewart, who eventually those results 10 times, nine are going to be great? What if it's another kid who does the same process, but those results are only going to be good three or four out of the 10 times," Geno Auriemma said.

"So that's a difficult one, because you can make somebody feel really, really, really good about the process, and then reward them when they get it right and don't harp on when they get it wrong, and don't expect them to get it right more times than they get it wrong, and keep convincing them that you know what you're getting right more times than the average guy. So let's just keep doing this, and let's see where it takes us."

Auriemma explains defensive approach in recent win over Georgetown

Geno Auriemma's UConn Huskies showcased strong effort on both sides of the ball in Sunday's 79-44 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas.

The Huskies' defense stood out in the game. They held Georgetown to just 26% shooting from the field and 33% from beyond the arc. They limited Georgetown's leading scorer Kelsey Ransom to just seven points on 2-of-9 shooting overall.

"You know, we’re trying to make a point that players are much easier to guard when they don’t have the ball than after they get it, especially good offensive players...Making sure that we had the right coverage, which we didn’t do such a great job of that in our previous game," Auriemma said during the postgame press conference.

The win pushed UConn to 9-1 on the season. Geno Auriemma and the No. 4 Huskies will face No. 18 Iowa State next at Mohegan Sun Arena on Dec. 17 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
