The No. 8 Maryland Terrapins has had strong momentum throughout the first half of the 2024-25 season. However, they suffered a key loss from the bench in Bri McDaniel.
McDaniel's last appearance on the court was against the No. 23 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Jan. 14. She left the game near the end of the first quarter, going up for a layup as she fell down in an awkward manner and had to be carried off the court. She was subsequently absent from the team's loss against the Texas Longhorns on Monday.
The Terrapins announced that she will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL. McDaniel addressed the Maryland fanbase on social media following the news.
“To all my fans and friends I just want to say thank you for all your support, love and prayers. Due to an ACL tear in my right knee I won't be able to play the rest of the season, but don't worry ya'll, the comeback is coming soon 24 out,” McDaniel said.
How losing Bri McDaniel impacts Maryland's standing
Bri McDaniel being out for the remainder of the season leaves a huge hole to fill in Maryland's second unit.
Maryland head coach Brenda Frese issued a statement following McDaniel's injury, affirming the team will provide all the support she needs in her recovery.
“We are so sad for Bri. She brings a competitive fire and passion every time she steps on the court and I know she will continue to pour that into her teammates," Frese said (via AP).
"She will have incredible support from our Maryland family and her amazing family back home. We will be with her every step of the way and I know she will attack her recovery and rehab to come back stronger than ever.”
McDaniel sees her campaign come to an end after 17 games, putting up 10.6 points, 2.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds off the bench. With her out, the team will see added responsibilities for Saylor Poffenbarger, Mir McLean, and Amari DeBerry among others.
Maryland currently has a 16-2 overall record this season (6-1 conference). They are averaging 82.2 points on shooting splits of 46.8% overall and 34.4% from downtown, beating opponents by a margin of 18 points per game.
Moving forward without Bri McDaniel, the No. 8 Terrapins will prepare for their ranked matchup against the No. 12 Ohio State Buckeyes at the Value City Arena on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. ET.
