Johni Broome suffered an injury during the No. 2 Auburn Tigers' matchup against the Georgia State Panthers on Tuesday.
He got hurt over two minutes into the game, as he rushed off the court and went into the locker room while holding his shoulder. He came back to the Tigers' bench with 11:34 left in the first half but donned a hoodie and an ice wrap over his shoulder, which confirmed that he wouldn't play for the remainder of the contest. He later wore a sling on his right arm in the second half.
On Thursday, head coach Bruce Pearl provided an update following an MRI scan on Broome's right shoulder on Wednesday. The current status is day-to-day as the the Auburn star won't need surgery to recover from the injury. However, his availability for the game against the No. 16 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET is up in the air.
"He won't practice today, but he will travel, obviously, up there. I couldn't even tell you status; whether it's questionable [or] not likely. We just don't know. But the good news — it's not a long-term problem," Pearl said via USATODAY.com.
Auburn's offense is impacted with Johni Broome being out
Johni Broome is a pivotal player for the Tigers on both sides of the ball.
After 11 games, Broome is averaging 18.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.7 blocks as he leads the country in rebounding and the SEC in blocks. He is shooting 55.3% from the field and 29.4% from beyond the arc while having seven double-doubles to his tally so far.
With a 10-1 record, Auburn has benefitted from Broome's prowess in both scoring and rebounding. They average 88.5 points per game on 51.1% shooting overall and 38% from downtown while holding opponents to 65.1 points on shooting splits of 38.9% from the field and 31.2% from 3.
Auburn can turn to Chaney Johnson to provide most of the injured star's production. He scored a career-high 26 points off the bench against Georgia State following Broome's injury, making him a player to keep an eye on throughout the game against the Boilermakers on Saturday.
"If he [Broome] wouldn't be available, I'm sure Chaney would be moving in," Pearl added.
If he can't play against Purdue, Broome will look to make his return when the Tigers host Monmouth at Neville Arena on Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. ET to finish their 2024 slate.
