Shelomi Sanders, daughter of the legendary Coach Prime (Deion Sanders), plays college basketball for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. Currently, in her junior year, Sanders is majoring in Sociology.
Sanders began her college career with Jackson State Lady Tigers and transferred to the Colorado Buffaloes the next season to stay close to Coach Prime. Her father had picked up the head coaching role with the Buffaloes football program. Although she has yet to speak on her classroom pursuits, Sanders was also pursuing Sociology at Colorado, suggesting an easy transition to A&M this summer.
Her academic choice reflects her curiosity about understanding social behaviors, which aligns with her NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) pursuits. While Deion Sanders continues to lead Colorado, Shelomi Sanders transferred to play under coach Dawn E. Thornton to earn a significant role on the basketball team, which the Buffaloes and Lady Tigers failed to provide.
Shelomi Sanders is spreading awareness for diabetes while in college
Alongside her academics and athletic endeavors, Shelomi Sanders also balances type-1 diabetes in her daily life, requiring her to keep an eye on her blood sugar levels and adequately practice insulin therapy.
She first found out about the condition when she rushed herself to the hospital due to a stomach ache as a 13-year-old. Deion Sanders initially doubted Sanders' condition when the father-daughter duo began working out together. Even though Shelomi began slimming down, Deion noticed that she was consuming water in significantly higher quantities than a person needs.
Shelomi Sanders has utilized her condition to spread awareness about navigating competitive sports as a diabetic athlete. Be it ways of managing blood sugar levels, helpful snacks, workout regimes, proper nutrition, helpful devices or others, Sanders has welcomed questions from fans and media.
Moreover, through her NIL collaboration with Dexcom, she advocates for youngsters and fans with similar conditions to continue their athletic dreams.
Sanders is one of the first athletes to be part of Dexcom's NIL initiative. She is joined by Sam Horn (Missouri), Isaac Traudt (Creighton), Amber Jackson (LSU) and 16 more athletes from across water polo, lacrosse, football, golf, cheerleading and other sports.
