In a dominant display, the No. 2-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the No. 5-ranked Texas Longhorns 67-50 on Sunday, and Dawn Staley used the postgame news conference to highlight her Gamecocks’ grit and focus.
“The toughness is both coached and comes from within the players,” Staley said. “But I will say with our team, they seem to really focus in when there's a number beside our opponent. They practice better, they’re more focused, and they talk less.”
The coach emphasized how South Carolina’s success often hinges on intangibles that don’t always show up on stat sheets.
“It’s about those 50-50 balls,” Staley said. “Trusting your teammates, providing help, and staying in the play without giving up on anything. I think it's ingrained in them to do that from a want to win, through our coaching staff.”
Staley credited her coaching staff for instilling the mentality but also highlighted the players’ desire to win as the driving force.
In the victory over Texas (16-2, 3-1 Southeastern Conference, the Gamecocks (16-1, 4-0) shot 51.0%, scoring 32 of the 67 points in the paint. Shooting 12 of 15 from the line contributed to their largest lead of the game (21), scoring 16 points from fastbreaks.
