Kim Mulkey, Geno Auriemma and MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle were part of a panel at the Aspen Ideas Festival in June to discuss NCAA women's basketball record viewership and its growth.
When Auriemma was asked about why he did not like to be labeled as a coach of a women's basketball team and just preferred to be known as a basketball coach, he spoke about his belief that there was no difference between coaching men and women and that the methods were the same.
Mulkey agreed with Auriemma and spoke about how the idea that coaching was gender specific was sexist. She said:
"Geno, I'll say what you really want to say. It's sexist. Anybody disagree with that? ... Just coach. Just coach the game. I have a son and I have a daughter. I'm gonna teach them the same way and just go coach the game. And that's what he's trying to say. But he's doing a really nice job as a male not to say it, right?"
Kim Mulkey not letting LSU ease up
The No. 6 LSU Tigers have a perfect 14-0 record this season. Despite this, Kim Mulkey will not have them let up. LSU is giving up 59.2 points per game on 32.8% shooting from the field and 25.4% from beyond the arc. However, they have allowed their opponents to shoot over 40% three times and this is a cause of concern for Mulkey.
"We've got to get better defensively," the coach said. "We just don't defend like it matters. We defend like we're better than you, and we're going to outscore you, and that just bothers me."
Speaking about what she was feeling going into the christmas break, she said:
"I'm supposed to be happy because it's Christmas, right? I'm just too competitive. I know what we face when we come back, when we start SEC play, and some of them in there need to do some soul searching."
The last non-conference matchup of 2024 for Kim Mulkey and No. 6 LSU will be against Albany at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
