In 2022, Dawn Staley shared her insights on ESPN during the NBA Finals, predicting a victory for Jason Tatum's Boston Celtics over Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors. Staley’s comments highlighted her admiration for Boston’s approach and why she believed they had what it took to emerge victorious.
“I think Boston is going to win it, I do,” Staley said. “There’s something divine about it.”
“They kinda look like the rest of the NBA, the Golden State Warriors are just head and shoulders above everybody else with the way they play basketball. It doesn't look like it’s ever attainable to anybody else to play that way.”
Staley’s statement was an appreciation for the Celtics’ hard-nosed, blue-collar style of basketball. The Hall of Famer compared their grind-it-out mentality to the Warriors’ innovative and seemingly unattainable style of play.
“The Boston Celtics are grinders," Staley said. "They look like us — they're blue-collar, the grinders.”
However, the Golden State Warriors ultimately won their fourth NBA title that year, winning the series 4-2.
Dawn Staley reflects on South Carolina’s dominant win over Texas A&M and upcoming challenges
Dawn Staley’s No. 2-ranked South Carolina had a blowout 90-49 victory over Texas A&M on Thursday, extending its winning streak to 10 games. During the postgame presser, Staley reflected on the team’s performance, challenges and outlook for the grueling schedule ahead.
She began by emphasizing her satisfaction with the Gamecocks’ improved tempo and strong start. She praised her team’s depth and the contributions of players across the roster, highlighting the value of elevating less-experienced players.
“We wanted to get off to a quicker start,” Staley said. “And we did for the most part. I thought certain people came in and impacted the game, no matter how much or how little time they had. We’re just working towards elevating the end of our bench.”
On the defensive side, Staley commended her Gamecocks’ preparedness against Texas A&M’s physical playstyle, noting the importance of discipline and focus.
“We were locked in and understood that they’re a very physical defensive team,” Staley said. “They cut your vision down and make it hard for you to make catches. If you give it back to teams like that, it can cause disruption.”
Looking ahead, South Carolina faces a tough stretch of five games in 16 days, all against ranked opponents (No. 5-ranked Texas, No. 18-ranked Alabama, No. 10-ranked Oklahoma, No. 6-ranked LSU and No. 16-ranked Tennessee). Staley conveyed confidence in South Carolina’s ability to rise to the challenge.
“I like where we are," Staley said. "I’m not worried about the schedule. Win, lose, or draw, we’re going to play hard and give our best effort. It’s going to be a battle, and we look forward to it.”
Freshman forward Joyce Edwards was a standout in the game, contributing 19 points off the bench along with 10 rebounds. Staley lauded Edwards’ growth and impact.
“Joyce is coming along and elevating her game,” Staley said. “Her contributions are invaluable, especially as we navigate injuries.”
Another player who had a strong game was MiLaysia Fulwiley who put up 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Sania Fagin had 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks while Tessa Johnson and Chloe Kitts contributed 11 points apiece.
