Geno Auriemma appeared alongside Kim Mulkey during a panel discussion with MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle at the Aspen Ideas Festival in June. The two discussed NCAA women’s basketball and the success that it was having after years of struggling to capture an audience.
One moment featured them talking about the double standards in the criticism they garnered based on what they said. Mulkey started by comparing how she would get attacked for saying the same thing Auriemma would say, to which the UConn coach would reply with a statement that drew laughs from the crowd.
"Geno and I've been around quite a while," Mulkey said. "Geno is a little bit older than I am. I've learned this, Geno's from the East Coast, right? I'm from the south. He can say the exact same damn thing, and I can say it. And who's going to get attacked? Here! I am!"
"What? You're out of your mind," Auriemma said. "That is so wrong, it's unbelievable. If you're a guy today and you say anything about women or women's basketball that isn't part of the mainstream, your a** is in trouble."
Geno Auriemma explains burden of being a coach
In an interview with Berett Ledbetter, Geno Auriemma spoke about how being away from family was one of the biggest downsides of his job.
“My job took me away from home a lot," Auriemma said. "Balancing out work, being a good dad, giving yourself some grace, and constantly being critical of myself and others, I think that’s the heaviest burden that I bring. And it’s all self-inflicted,” Auriemma said.
This season, Auriemma has UConn off to a 10-2 start. They are averaging 80.1 points on 50.9% shooting from the field and 36.1% from beyond the arc. Geno Auriemma and the No. 7 UConn Huskies have one more game to close out the 2024 calendar year when they Providence at the XL Center on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
