UConn senior Azzi Fudd stepped up in a big way after the absence of injured star Paige Bueckers against Xavier on Wednesday night. Fudd scored 23 points and hit three 3-pointers to lead the Huskies to an 81-27 win at XL Center in Hartford.
The No. 7 Huskies were without Bueckers, who sprained her knee against Villanova on Sunday, but UConn did not miss a beat as Fudd and the rest of the team dominated the Musketeers.
After the game, UConn fans did not waste time showering Fudd with praise on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter).
Here are some of the top tweets:
"Wow she really is steph curry’s daughter like…," one fan wrote.
"Azzi quietly plays better when there is no Paige 🫣," a user claimed.
"Paige being out is only going to unleash Azzi now," another fan added.
"azzi fudd masterclass, jana and ashlyn starting, ice brady crashing the boards, uconn doing well without paige," one tweet read, adding to the sentiment that UConn can succeed without their superstar.
Here are a few more reactions:
"the peoples princess is SOOO back ily azzi fudd," a fan noted.
"azzi fudd the player you are she did her thing tonight!!" another wrote.
"i’m never arguing with a girl with dimples whatever u say princess," one user tweeted, adding pictures of the UConn guard.
Azzi Fudd reacts to Paige Bueckers on the bench against Xavier
As much as she might have wanted to be on the floor, Paige Bueckers could not play against Xavier on Wednesday due to a "lower-body sprain." But the 6-foot guard was still there to support her teammates, cheering them.
During the postgame conference, Azzi Fudd was asked about Bueckers' role on the bench.
"I mean that's a [Chris Dailey] issue. CD has to tell her to calm down," Fudd said. “But you can't, you can't tell Paige to calm down. She's everyone's biggest cheerleader, biggest fan, and biggest supporter, so there's no telling her to, like, calm down."
Fudd, who returned to the court against FDU on Nov. 20 after missing most of the last season due to injury, showed that UConn can still count on her when needed.
"Coach was really harping on, like Paige is out, everyone has to step up and grow in other areas that we might not have been able to do before, and I think that all of us really did that tonight," Fudd said after the game.
