The 2025 class No. 1 recruit, Aaliyah Chavez, is back in school for her senior season. The Lubbock Monterey guard enjoyed her summer with incredible performances on circuit basketball, including an MVP honor at the Mamba League Invitational.

On Monday, Chavez posted an Instagram story of her dancing to B.o.B's "HeadBand" (feat. 2 Chainz) with her classmate. She wore a "Scooby Doo" outfit for the pajama day at her school.

"I guess you can call me Scooby Doo," she wrote.

Aaliyah Chavez was one of the heavily recruited basketball players in the 2025 class. She narrowed her offers to six schools in July, and the list included: Texas Tech, LSU, UCLA, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Chavez is expected to make a final decision in October.

Her father, Sonny Chavez, spoke of the importance of his daughter attending college to The Washington Post in July.

“Before NIL, I was working so hard just to get my kid free school,” Sonny said. “It was about: ‘Go get free school and change our generational curse of not getting to the next level.'
"'I didn’t finish college; my wife didn’t finish college. So change it. Go be the first one, and use basketball as the tool to do it.’ Now, with NIL, it’s like, ‘Go change your life.’”

Aaliyah Chavez is predicted to be college basketball's biggest player

Aaliyah Chavez's skills on the court have captivated fans and recruiters. Her smooth jump shots and her implosive scoring are an asset to any team.

Jason Key, a national talent evaluator, sang high praises of the 5-foot-11 guard. Commenting on her potential in college and beyond, Key said (via the Washington Post):

“You’re talking about a face-of-the-franchise-type player. Paige [Bueckers]. Caitlin. JuJu Watkins. She is that type of kid. She is on that level in terms of what she can bring to a school.”

For Aaliyah Chavez, basketball is more than just a sport. It is an opportunity for her to represent her community and her roots on a national level.

“You don’t see a lot of people that look like me out here,” Chavez said (via The Washington Post). “I’m just trying to do it for the Mexican community and for any kids who may not think they can do this.”

Chavez's Nike EYBL team CyFair's director, Earl Allen, also acknowledged the rarity of having a player like her from Texas.

“To be honest with you, we don’t get very many Spanish kids that come out to play basketball for us,” Allen said. “Especially one that is that damn good.”
