Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes took on the South Carolina Gamecocks twice in the last two March Madness editions. The first, a Final Four clash, saw Iowa take the win. In the second time, the 2024 title game, the Gamecocks won, taking home their third NCAA Championship.
During an appearance on the Two P's On a Pod podcast with Patrick McCaffery and Payton Sandfort last year, Clark recalled a specific incident from their Final Four clash. The Fever guard was warming up with former Hawkeyes Gabbie Marshall when South Carolina walked onto the arena.
"I look at Gabbie and I'm like they are so tall," Caitlin Clark noted. "That doesn't even do it justice on the court from where you guys would sit or see on TV. They are so tall and so athletic. At one point, I remember Kate tried to box out Cardoso, who's like a phenomenal player [and] will be a top pick in the upcoming draft."
She added:
"Kate's boxing her out like a textbook box out, she just reaches overshoots it. She has no idea a foul was called. Kate's still boxing her out and nailing her legs, but it wasn't an over the back. She's just flat-out taller than Kate, like nothing you can do."
She concluded:
"Kate looks at me and I'm like, I just start laughing in the middle of the game. I'm like, I don't know man. There's like I'm like there's nothing you can do there. You tried a textbook box out, you're just too short."
True to her predictions, Kamilla Cardoso went on to be picked No. 3 by the Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA draft. Martin, on the other hand, was selected No. 18 by the Las Vegas Aces.
Kate Martin expresses her gratitude at having Caitlin Clark in the WNBA
After playing five years with the Iowa Hawkeyes, few believed that Kate Martin would be selected in the draft. To the surprise of many, Martin, who attended the draft to support Caitlin Clark, was also picked.
In an interview with USA Today, the Aces rookie admitted that she was grateful to have Clark with her to share her troubles.
"It’s so rare in this league for two people from the same team to both make it, unless you go to UConn or South Carolina or something, there’s so many of them in the league. It’s really nice to have one of your best friends going through a similar experience," Kate Martin said.
She added:
"She knows exactly what I mean every time I say something; it’s hard to talk to other friends (about the WNBA) because they just don’t understand our jobs."
Despite facing each other as competitors twice in the WNBA, the love and friendship between the two still exist. While Caitlin Clark continues to break records and lead the Fever team, Kate Martin is making her own mark with the defending champions as a role player with the superstars.
