A'ja Wilson is in the middle of the best season of her WNBA career, leading the league in points (27.1) and blocks (2.8) alongside, 11.6 rebounds (2nd best) and 1.9 steals (4th best).

Her recent feat comes from the game against the Washington Mystics, where she posted her fifth consecutive high-scoring double, earning praise from her ex-South Carolina coach Dawn Staley for her ongoing surge.

"Dizzam I just checked @_ajawilson22 statline…..oh you back to rebounding huh Ms. Wilson?!! 🥰🥰🥰 double double and almost double that up! You really trying to send a message to that voter who gave you a 4th place MVP vote. 🫣🫣🫣," Staley wrote in her recent X post.

A'ja Wilson opened the season behind back-to-back double-doubles but struggled to post similar numbers consistently, clinching the stat line twice in the next 10 games. While her scoring mounted her to the top of the WNBA MVP race, she declined on the rebounding leaderboard.

Nevertheless, the recent increase in Wilson's overall production is slowly pacing her toward Angel Reese's league-leading 12 rebounds per game. Moreover, Dawn Staley also hints at the 2-time MVP's motivation for the current season, a 2023 MVP snub that labeled her as the 4th best player of the season.

A'ja Wilson will make WNBA history if she wins the 2024 WNBA MVP award

More than the failure to win the 2023 WNBA MVP, Wilson was fueled by her ranking on the leaderboard. The hurt was evident through her T-shirt at the Las Vegas Aces' 2023 championship parade, which broke down the MVP race.

Now, A'ja Wilson is nearing a historic season. She is leading the 2024 MVP race and could be the first player ever to win the prestigious title with averages of more than 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Currently, the only players to come closer to the never-done-before feat are Sylvia Fowles (2017), Tina Charles (2012), Jonquel Jones (2021) and Yolanda Griffith (1999). However, none of them touch the 20-point mark.

Moreover, if A'ja Wilson maintains her scoring touch throughout the season, she could be the all-scoring leader amongst WNBA MVPs. Maya Moore holds the current record from 2014 with 23.9 points per game.
