Iowa Hawkeyes alum Caitlin Clark was named the 2024 Player of the Year, beating out players like UConn's Paige Bueckers, USC's JuJu Watkins and Stanford's Cameron Brink. Clark was honored for the second straight season and became the all-time top scorer in NCAA Division I basketball.
With Clark now in the WNBA, the stage is set for a new star to take the award. On Monday, an X/Twitter account posted a potential list of contenders for the upcoming season's Player of the Year award:
However, college basketball fans were left perplexed by the predictions and were quick to vote their displeasure in the comments. Many expressed their disbelief that LSU's Flaujae Johnson was not included on the list, considering her stellar performance last season:
"No Flaujae?????? this list unserious," one fan wrote.
"Any list without Fla'jaue & Aneesah on it is ludicrous," another fan commented.
"A list without Flaujae is an unimportant list. Not to mentions u missing aneesah Raven, Malaysia. Let’s try again," one fan added.
"The disrespect not to add flau and Anessah is CRAZY," another fan said.
Some critics even argue that the list shows a lack of understanding of women's basketball:
"Whoever made this post, don’t know women’s basketball. I’m sorry." one fan wrote.
"Others who have a great chance: Aneesah Morrow, Audi Crooks, Kiki Iriafen, Raegan Beers, Cotie McMahon," another fan commented.
Can Paige Bueckers reclaim the POY award this season?
UConn point guard Paige Bueckers had an excellent 2023-24 campaign, leading the Huskies to a Final Four appearance while posting impressive stats lines all season.
UConn secured the Big East regular season and tournament titles thanks to Bueckers, who was named Big East Player of the Year and First-Team All-Big East. The 6-foot athlete missed an entire 2022-23 season with an ACL injury, but returned with a bang averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game last season:
"I know I'm not at the top, at the peak of my performance. I'm not anywhere where I wanna be. So. I'm always motivated by that, always motivated by wanting to win. I haven't won a national championship. So. I'm trying to get there. I'm tryna work for it," Bueckers said during an appearance on the 'This is Winning Basketball' show.
Bueckers will play her last season of college basketball with her eyes fixed on the NCAA national championship before joining the likes of Clark and Brink in the WNBA.
