The North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball program competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and plays in the Carmichael Arena on the campus of UNC. The Tar Heels have appeared in 31 NCAA tournaments, 18 Sweet Sixteen, seven Elite Eight, three Final Four and one national championship in 1994. The women’s basketball team is led by Courtney Banghart who has entered her sixth season with the Tar Heels program as of December 2024.

Courtney Banghart joined the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2019 as the head coach following 12 years with Princeton. She has led the Tar Heels to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and has a record of 96-56 as of December 2024..
She began her career as a head coach at Episcopal High School and returned to her alma mater Dartmouth in 2003 as an assistant coach. She won two Ivy League championships during her four-year stint as Dartmouth’s recruiting coordinator.

Associate Head Coach
Joanne Aluka-White has entered her sixth season with the UNC after joining the program in 2019 as an assistant coach. The 2024/25 campaign will be her first year as an associate head coach. Before joining Banghart’s coaching staff, Aluka-White spent seven seasons with the Charlotte 49ers.
Assistant Coaches
Adrian Walters, Cory McNeill, Katherine Bixby, and Daniel Metzelfeld are the four assistant coaches on the UNC women’s basketball coaching staff. Adrian Walters arrived at Chapel Hill in 2020 with over 20 years of experience. Prior to his arrival at UNC, Walters made stops at Alabama, Auburn, and Georgetown.
Cory McNeill joined Banghart’s coaching staff in the summer of 2024 after spending the last five seasons at East Carolina.
Katherine Bixby joined the USC coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2024 after spending one lone year at Loyola of Maryland. She also had a six-year stint as the head coach at Johns Hopkins and was honoured with the 2019 Centennial Conference Coach of the Year.
Daniel Metzelfeld joined the Tar Heels coaching staff in 2023 and was part of Banghart’s staff at UNC in her debut campaign. He left in 2020 to join the Davidson Wildcats coaching staff as an assistant coach for three seasons.
