Notre Dame's Hanna Hidalgo allegedly shared a video calling gay marriage "a sin"

Hanna Hidalgo, a rising Notre Dame point guard, dominated the ACC awards last season as a freshman. She claimed every individual honor, including ACC Tournament MVP, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, ACC All-Defensive Team and ACC Rookie of the Year.

Last Thursday, Hidalgo spoke to former CNN host Don Lemon and political commentator Candace Owens in an interview. Hidalgo reportedly shared a video criticizing same-sex marriage as a "sin."

In the video, Owens was questioned about same-sex marriage and she replied saying, "It's a sin."

"You think it’s a sin? So you think I’m sinful because I'm married to a man?" Don Lemon reacted.

"Yes, you're sinning," Owens replied without hesitation. "You are in a sinful relationship. I actually don't believe marriage can be between two men."

Hanna Hidalgo uploaded the clip of Lemon and Owens' heated conversation to her Instagram story but quickly deleted it after it sparked controversy. The 5-foot-6 Notre Dame star received backlash from the sports community, causing some fans to turn against her.

Lemon also posted a video on Instagram suggesting his followers to watch the interview.

"Tough conversations need to happen! @realcandaceowens," Lemon wrote.

Emmy winner Don Lemon married Tim Malone, a real estate agent, in April 2024 after dating for seven years.

Hanna Hidalgo wins the 2024 Dawn Staley Award

Hanna Hidalgo, a Notre Dame freshman last season, had an extraordinary year. She averaged 22.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game for the Fighting Irish. He guided them to an ACC tournament victory and the NCAA tournament Sweet Sixteen.

Hidalgo, a five-star rated guard committed to Notre Dame in November 2022 and played her first game a year later in November 2023 against Dawn Staley's South Carolina. She graduated her high school at Paul VI in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

Moreover, Hidalgo won the 2023-24 Dawn Staley Award, given to the top guard in Women’s Division I college basketball, breaking Caitlin Clark's three-year streak of winning the honor. Here are the full list of Hidalgo's accolades from the previous season:

Besides, Hidalgo also broke several records including the ACC freshman scoring record. In a game against Virginia Tech, she scored 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and made six assists. She set Notre Dame's new record for the most steals in a single season, surpassing Skylar Diggins-Smith.
