Senior guard Olivia Miles showcased her versatility, but her efforts weren’t enough to help No. 3 Notre Dame overcome No. 17 TCU, falling 76-68 on Friday at the Cayman Islands Classic.
The fourth-year standout contributed 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 39 minutes of play. She shot 7-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc. However, she missed both of her free-throw attempts, committed two turnovers and picked up one foul.
At halftime, Miles added a key three-pointer to give Notre Dame a 35-29 lead. The Irish held a 61-57 advantage at the 6:50 mark of the fourth quarter, but their offense stalled. They didn’t score again until Miles hit a jumper with 4:07 remaining, briefly regaining the lead. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, it was their final lead of the game.
Miles was unable to replicate her standout performance from last Saturday’s 74-61 win over then-No. 3 USC, which had propelled the Fighting Irish to No. 3 in the national rankings. In that game, she tallied 20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and four three-pointers.
The Irish looked poised to take control of the game in the third quarter. After TCU cut the lead to 35-33, Notre Dame responded with a 13-2 run to restore a double-digit advantage. The Irish extended their lead to as many as 14 points before closing the quarter ahead by 11.
Heading into the fourth quarter with a 56-45 lead, Notre Dame's offense stalled. The Irish managed to make only 5 of their 20 shots (34%) in the final period, while TCU caught fire, hitting 11 of 18 attempts, including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.
Olivia Miles shines despite Notre Dame’s loss
Despite the defeat, Miles continued to demonstrate her growth as a playmaker and scorer. She has been efficient from beyond the arc, boasting a 54.2% shooting rate this season. Known for her ability to create opportunities for her teammates, she also understands when to step up and take charge offensively.
Miles earned the distinction of being the first ACC Player of the Week this season. She is currently averaging 18.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.8 steals over five games, surpassing her previous season averages of 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 2.1 steals. Last year, she played a pivotal role in leading Notre Dame to the Sweet Sixteen before falling to Maryland.
Miles and the Fighting Irish will conclude their time in the Cayman Islands on Saturday evening with a matchup against Utah (5-2). Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
