UConn Huskies guard Paige Bueckers is on the brink of making program history on Sunday during their game against the Seton Hall Pirates. The senior star is six points shy of reaching 2,000 college career points, becoming the 12th Husky to achieve this milestone and surpassing WNBA legend Maya Moore as the fastest to do so in UConn history at just 102 games.
Bueckers, who averages 19.4 points per game this season, is expected to reach the milestone despite still recovering from a recent knee injury, which limited her to 12 points in Wednesday's win over the St. John Red Storm.
Her longtime coach, Geno Auriemma, expressed pride in her upcoming accomplishment but couldn't resist adding a sarcastic remark about how she achieved it during the pre-game interview for their next Big East matchup:
"How she makes it look (like) it's never hard, not a struggle for her to get her shots off (and) get the points that she wants (that's the most impressive). Now, there are times when it doesn't look as easy as others. There are times where she passes up a really good shot. We call it up. She passes up a lot of good sh*t for some bullsh*t stuff," Auriemma shared (8:00).
"If she would just take the good shot, she would get even more points. But, she would, sometimes, do a little more," he added.
Bueckers is one of the most prolific scorers in college basketball and her efficiency from the field stands out. This season, she boasts a 53.5% field goal percentage on approximately 14 shots per game, along with a 41.9% average from beyond the arc. Expect her to continue this trend and take high-quality shots in Sunday's game.
Geno Auriemma cites two reasons for Paige Bueckers almost reaching 2,000 career points in 102 games
During media availability, Geno Auriemma shared two reasons from his perspective on how Paige Bueckers has reached 2,000 career points in just 102 games:
"One, her scenario (is) quite different from all the other players that we've had. Paige was a national player of the year as a freshman. So, right away, she got her to a start that set her up for things like this," he said (6:20).
"Secondly, she's been fortunate and unfortunate. Fortunate when it comes to points, to be on a team without a lot of other amazing all-American type scorers. So, she got to benefit of that. The unfortunate thing is it's hard to win national championships unless you have those guys," Auriemma added.
As Bueckers prepares to make history on Sunday, she remains focused on team success beyond this milestone. The Hopkins, Minnesota, native has yet to win a national championship and is currently in her fourth and likely final year of college basketball.
With an undefeated conference record and a 16-2 overall standing, Bueckers and Auriemma are determined to secure the national title in March, especially since the program hasn't won it since 2016.
