Francis John McCaffery is the father of Patrick McCaffery. He is the head coach of the University of Iowa men's basketball, as of 2024. Before this, he was the head coach of Siena, UNC Greensboro, and Lehigh University. Before moving to Penn, McCaffery spent a season playing collegiate basketball at Wake Forest. He earned the moniker "White Magic" during his playing career and was also known as the "Conductor" on the court.

Ultimately, the NCAA granted him a hardship waiver, allowing him to play the season as a redshirt. He averaged 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while playing in all 31 of the Hawkeyes' games as a redshirt freshman. During his sophomore season as a redshirt, McCaffery averaged 10.5 points and 3.6 rebounds before starting.
After starting the first 14 games of his redshirt junior season, McCaffery took a leave of absence, stating that he needed to take care of his mental health. In 27 games played, he averaged 9.8 points and 3.5 rebounds at the end of the season. During his redshirt senior season, McCaffery averaged 8.9 points and 2.8 rebounds while playing in 31 games, 15 of which he started.
Following the season, McCaffery entered the NCAA transfer portal and decided to take advantage of the additional year of eligibility that was provided to collegiate athletes who participated in the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the end, McCaffery moved to Butler to play.
