He played high school basketball for Trinity High School in Spanish Lake, Missouri, United States before joining the Bluejays as a four-star prospect after rejecting offers from Stanford, Purdue, and Kansas.
A native of Florissant, Missouri, Kalkbrenner developed into one of the nation's most promising defenders during his time with the Creighton Bluejays. He won the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award four times and the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year honor in 2025. He also bagged the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the top center in college basketball. He also helped Team USA win gold at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup.
