Serena Sundell was selected by the Seattle Storm with the 26th pick in the third round of the 2025 WNBA draft. She was a guard for the Kansas State Wildcats during her whole NCAA basketball career. After high school, Serena Sundell joined the Kansas State Wildcats women's basketball team at Kansas State University. During her rookie season, Sundell started all 33 games and averaged a team-high 32.3 minutes per game. She was the only freshman in K-State's history to have 350 points, 175 assists, and 100 rebounds or more.

Sundell was the lone Wildcat to start every one of the 36 games during the 2022–2023 season as a sophomore. She became the seventh Wildcat in program history to score 500 points or more during her sophomore year. Sundell, a native of Maryville, Missouri, prepped for basketball at Maryville High School. Sundell received numerous honors during her last year of high school, including being selected the MCBA's Class 4 All-State, 2020-21 Class 4 Player of the Year, and 2021 Miss Show-Me Basketball. The Maryville Forum Nodaway County Female Athlete of the Year award was also given to her.
