The USC Trojans narrowly defeated the UConn Huskies, 72-70, on the opponents' home floor last Saturday. Sophomore star JuJu Watkins won the matchup against senior sensation Paige Bueckers this time, dropping 25 points over the latter's 22, with six rebounds, five assists, a steal, and three blocks.
It was a highly-anticipated fixture that did not disappoint with its tooth-and-nail competition and a showcase of college basketball's brightest standouts. Since then, there have been many spectators and credible analysts who have discussed the narratives that further developed from the game, such as the budding rivalry between Watkins and Bueckers.
Former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague joined the discussion with his hot takes, saying that the USC standout is better than the UConn guard. In a recent episode of the Club 520 podcast, Teague expressed his thoughts on Watkins, specifically talking about how smooth her game is.
"Her game is so smooth. She kind of got like a dude like movement. She kind of shoots stepbacks like a dude," he shared. (0:51)
Teague then later elaborated on his thoughts:
"I'm a fan of JuJu game though. I don't be looking at her like that but she not like ugly. You know what I'm saying?" (3:15)
Watkin's complete offensive game at all three levels has got her to average 24.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists for the 11-1 Trojans. Not only that, but the 19-year-old is also a threat on defense, tallying 2.4 swipes and 2.0 swats per contest.
As one of the best two-way guards of the NBA at one point, Teague's words are a testament to the kind of potential the 6'2 sensation has shown. Watkins' full bag of skills will be on display on Sunday, Dec. 29, when USC takes on the Michigan Wolverines.
Jeff Teague compares JuJu Watkins to Anthony Edwards
As the conversation in the episode continued, Teague later compared Watkins to Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards. He described her game to be free-flowing, much like the NBA superstar:
"Her's (game) kind of got her own flow. It's kind of like Anthony Edwards, just kind of be flowing with it." (1:30)
Watkins is not yet eligible for the WNBA, but as she further hones her skills in the NCAA, it is only a matter of time.
