Sion James is a shooting guard for the Duke Blue Devils, a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, as of February 2025, and is a graduate student. He attended Lanier High School where he averaged 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game as a junior. James started his college basketball career at Tulane. During his freshman year, he became an early starter and averaged 5.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. During his junior year, he averaged 9.7 points, 3.4 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game. Additionally, James also won the American Athletic Conference (AAC) sportsmanship award.

While James was in his senior year, he averaged 14 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Following the end of the season, James decided the enter the NCAA transfer portal and eventually moved to Duke. At Duke, he played four seasons and attended 114 career games, among which he started 107 of those. The player recorded 1,084 points, 520 rebounds, 337 assists, and 187 steals. At Tulane, he won the AAC Sportsmanship Award twice and became the first player to win it two times. In the 2024-25 season, during his first two games, James turned in double-digit scoring performances off the bench. He concluded a game-high +31 against George Mason in 31 minutes of action which was a new season-high.
