Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry appreciated the humility of South Carolina Gamecocks sophomore guard MiLaysia Fulwiley despite her uncanny talent set which helped the Gamecocks to a perfect 38-0 record en route to the 2024 national championship victory.
Fulwiley has been a source of instant offense for the Gamecocks off the bench, averaging 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in 50 games.
Curry, who played for Davidson in college, admired Fulwiley's down-to-earth attitude and fearlessness on the court.
"She knows she’s good but there’s humility too," Curry said via Greenville News. "She knows she has a lot more to do and can get a lot better. I like that combination. There’s things you can’t teach with her, her ball handling, speed, athleticism, the way she sees the game, she's fearless".
Curry, president of Curry Brand, signed Fulwiley to an NIL deal with the shoe brand in March. The South Carolina guard became the first collegiate star to sign with Curry Brand.
As a brand ambassador, Fulwiley is required to wear Curry Brand footwear on the court throughout her college career with the Gamecocks.
MiLaysia Fulwiley wants to be more of a fancy player
MiLaysia Fulwiley wants to be more than just a fancy player, seeking to help the Gamecocks in more ways than one.
"I can't let last year define me, I did a lot of fancy stuff but I want to be more than just a fancy player," Fulwiley said.
The 5-foot-10 guard has flashes of brilliance this season, scoring a game-high 23 points against Coppin State on Nov. 14 and 20 points against No. 9 seed TCU on Dec. 8.
Her flashy play, however, does have fallbacks, as she tallied only three points and one rebound in an 81-70 win over Duke and was benched after three minutes of action against UCLA on Nov. 24.
Despite her errors, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley keeps Fulwiley on the rotation and reminds her to use flash and fundamentals the right way.
"I don’t expect her to understand it every play every game, I just want her aware of it. She’s not resisting it, she’s welcoming it because she wants more for herself," Staley said.
The WJ Keenan standout is thankful for the blessings and the mentors she has on her journey to the top.
MiLaysia Fulwiley noted that being in her home state and coached by arguably the best women's college basketball coach right now is something worth treasuring. The younger version of herself would be proud of how she fulfilled her dreams.
