College basketball fans took to social media to troll Kim Mulkey's LSU squad after its 66-56 loss to Dawn Staley's South Carolina. The defeat ended LSU’s 20-game winning streak and dropped the Lady Tigers to a tie for second in the SEC standings.
South Carolina (19-1, 7-0 SEC) opened up a 10-point lead in the third quarter and led by as much as 13 late in the game to extend its dominance over LSU (20-1, 5-1). The defeat marked the fifth straight loss for Mulkey’s LSU to Staley's squad since Mulkey was hired as the Lady Tigers' coach in 2021.
NCAA women's basketball fans didn’t hold back after the loss, delivering jabs at Kim Mulkey and her team on X (formerly Twitter). One fan used a Joel Embiid quote to slam the notion that the South Carolina-LSU showdown is a rivalry.
"What’s that Embiid Quote😂 This ain’t no rivalry, we always kick they ass😂😂," the fan wrote on X.
South Carolina fans and other college basketball followers piled on with biting remarks.
"Dawn Staley owns Kim Mulkey," a South Carolina fan said.
"LSU wasn't ready for the SEC," another user pointed out.
"LOUISIANA SUCKS UNIVERSITY LMFAOOOOO," a fan added.
Some fans praised South Carolina’s defensive performance, which stifled LSU’s high-powered offense, typically averaging over 90 points per game, and held the Lady Tigers to just 56 points.
"The defense was suffocating, and the number of blocked shots was incredible. Margin of victory would have been much more had the foul shooting not been so mediocre. Missed way too many," a college basketball follower said.
"Outscored their bench 31-2 teams can’t hang with the depth," a fan added.
Kim Mulkey's LSU falters with poor shooting, turnovers
After a strong first quarter in which they scored 22 points, the Lady Tigers’ offense sputtered. They managed only 34 points over the next three quarters as South Carolina’s defense clamped down, particularly on LSU’s bench.
LSU’s reserves were nearly nonexistent, with Kailyn Gilbert contributing the bench’s only two points. Overall, the Lady Tigers shot a dismal 29.9%, and their top scorers — Flau’Jae Johnson (6-for-18), Mikaylah Williams (5-for-17) and Aneesah Morrow (6-for-19) — struggled to find their rhythm.
South Carolina showcased its defense, forcing 17 turnovers and blocking 11 shots. The Gamecocks also led in steals, 13-8.
While LSU dominated the boards, 51-39, Morrow grabbed 16 rebounds, the Lady Tigers were unable to capitalize on their advantage.
LSU will have the chance for a rematch with South Carolina in the SEC Tournament if both teams win their respective games.
