UConn men's basketball has garnered a lot of success over the past few decades. And it wouldn't have been done without their star players leading the way.
They have won six national championships since 1999, maintaining a strong presence in the NCAA Tournament as they saw their players transform into national sensations and etch themselves as the best in Huskies lore.
Here are the five best UConn players in men's basketball history.
Top 5 all-time UConn men's basketball players
#5. Donovan Clingan
Before starting his NBA career this past summer, Donovan Clingan has the privilege of winning back-to-back titles with the UConn Huskies.
While he may not have had the flashiest stats during his two years at UConn, his impact on the court was undeniable. As a full-time starter in his second season, he averaged 13 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks en route to earning All-American Honorable Mentions from national outlets.
Having helped the Huskies achieve a feat that hasn't been done by any team since the Florida Gators in the 2000s, Clingan is more than deserving of a place among the program's best ever.
#4. Ray Allen
Even though he never won a national championship, Ray Allen cemented himself as one of UConn's first stars.
He was responsible for some of the program's first deeper runs in the NCAA Tournament, taking them to the Sweet Sixteen twice (1995, 1996) and the Elite Eight once (1995). He was named Big East Player of the Year in his final season, being known throughout the country as an elite three-point shooter during a time when the 3-point shot wasn't being emphasized as much as it is in today's game.
Allen currently ranks first in 3-point field goal percentage (.448) and true shooting percentage (.594), third in points per game (19.0) and field goals made (705) and fifth in points scored (1922). His impact with the Huskies, especially following his legendary career in the NBA, won't be forgotten.
#3. Emeka Okafor
Defense and winning plays summed up Emeka Okafor's career with the Huskies, making memorable history throughout his time there.
He made himself a defensive star at UConn, being named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year twice as well as Big East Player of the Year in 2004. That year was a huge success for Okafor and the Huskies, winning the national championship as he was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player.
Okafor tops the all-time charts in field goal percentage (.590), blocks (441), blocks per game (4.3) and win shares (22.3). He is also second in true shooting percentage (.591), fourth in total rebounds (1,091) and sixth in rebounds per game (10.6).
#2. Richard Hamilton
Following Ray Allen's time with the Huskies, Richard Hamilton was the next player to enter the picture as a star.
Hamilton was a force for the Huskies, being a consensus All-American in 1998 and 1999 as well as the Big East's Player of the Year. He led the Huskies to their first-ever national championship in 1999, capping off his collegiate career with a bang.
Hamilton is second all-time on UConn's scoring list with 2,036 career points as well as a scoring average of 19.8 ppg. He is also third in free throw percentage (.826), fourth in field goals made (691) and 3-point field goal percentage, sixth in 3-point field goals made (237) and eighth in win shares (16.8).
#1. Kemba Walker
Peaking in the NBA as an All-Star, Kemba Walker earned his stripes thanks to his winning mentality with the Huskies.
Walker averaged 23.5 ppg as a scoring sensation for UConn in his last season, willing his team to the national championship in 2011. He received national recognition for his efforts, including the Bob Cousy Award and All-American honors.
While he does not rank first in any statistical category on the all-time chart, he does hold the second spot in free throws made (501) and usage percentage (26.2) while being fifth in win shares (17.9), seventh in steals per game (1.7) and ninth in points (1783).
