The UConn Huskies are synonymous with producing WNBA-ready players who are extremely skilled. The ongoing 2024-25 season has 16 former Huskies, including newcomers like Nika Mühl and Aaliyah Edwards, and the greatest players of all time Tina Charles, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi.
In the 27 years of league history, there have been many UConn alumnae who have etched their names in the history books. Here are five all-time greats from the UConn Huskies.
Top five WNBA players of all time who played for UConn Huskies
#1 Breanna Stewart
Breanna Stewart is the most popular Husky who achieved many unique feats, including four championships in the four years she played for them between 2012 to 2016. She was also named the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four in those seasons.
UConn's championship run during Stewart's time included undefeated seasons in 2014 and 2016, and she won the Naismith Player of the Year thrice.
Breanna Stewart has two championship rings with the Seattle Storm in the WNBA and won a Gold Medal with Team USA at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
#2 Diana Taurasi
The three-time NCAA champion played for the UConn Huskies from 2000 to 2004. She lead the Big East conference in points (663) during the 2002-2003 season. Taurasi partnered with Sue Bird in 2002 to give UConn its second of six undefeated seasons. The two were the most popular backcourt duo.
Diana Taurasi was drafted first overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2004 and has won three championships with the team.
#3 Maya Moore
From 2007 to 2011, Maya Moore wreaked havoc on UConn's opponents, leading the team to undefeated seasons in 2009 and 2010, winning the championships in both years. She was a versatile player who played both ends of the court.
Outside the arena, Maya Moore was an equally dedicated student. She graduated with a 3.7 GPA and was named the CoSIDA Academic All-American First-Team in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She's one of the two Huskies to win the CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year twice (Paige Bueckers did so in 2024).
Maya Moore was picked first overall by the Minnesota Lynx, with whom she played until her retirement in 2023 and won four WNBA championships.
#4 Sue Bird
Sue Bird played for the Huskies from 1998 to 2002 and won the NCAA championship twice, in 2000 and 2002.
Despite an ACL injury in the freshman season, which caused her only to play eight games, Bird bounced back and became one of the most celebrated players in NCAA history.
She was picked first overall by the Seattle Storm and won four WNBA championships with them before retiring in 2022.
#5 Rebecca Lobo
Rebecca Lobo gave UConn one of its first undefeated of the six seasons in her senior year (1995) when the Huskies also won their first NCAA championship. Lobo led the Big East in points (598) and NCAA in blocks (122) during the 1994-94 season.
After her graduation, Lobo was one of the first players to play in the WNBA when it was formed in 1997. She played for the New York Liberty, Houston Comets and Connecticut Sun before retiring in 2003.
