He helped Lake Highlands post a 34-3 record and led them to the UIL Class 6A state championship, which was the school's first since 1968. The same year, he was also named the National Junior of the Year by MaxPreps and Mr. Basketball in Texas. He scored over 2,000 career points at the state tournament and finished the season with 29 points in the state championship game. As a sophomore, his statistics were 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
