Hunter began his collegiate journey with Iowa State in 2021 where he spent one year before moving to Texas Longhorns for the next two seasons. As a freshman in 2021, he averaged 11.0 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game and was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year, according to the Tigers website. In his sophomore campaign with the Longhorns, Hunter started all 38 games and averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 assists. As a junior, Hunter saw action in 33 games and was second on the team with 4.1 assists. Hunter decided to move to the Memphis Tigers for his final year of eligibility in 2024. Before his collegiate journey, Hunter went to St. Catherine's High School, where he led them to a Division 3 state title in his senior year. During his senior season, Hunter averaged 18.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He concluded his prep career with 1,589 career points, according to the Iowa website. Hunter was ranked the No.31 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class by Rivals and was rated a four-star recruit.
