Hunter began his collegiate journey with Iowa State in 2021 where he spent one year before moving to Texas Longhorns for the next two seasons. Before his collegiate journey, Hunter went to St. Catherine's High School, where he led them to a Division 3 state title in his senior year. During his senior season, Hunter averaged 18.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He concluded his prep career with 1,589 career points, according to the Iowa website. Hunter was ranked the No.31 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class by Rivals and was rated a four-star recruit.
