Vic Schaefer is an American college basketball coach who has entered his fifth season as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team. He started his coaching journey as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State in 1987 and later earned a promotion to the head coaching role in 1990. He served as the head coach for seven years before joining the Arkansas women’s basketball program as an assistant coach in 1997.
His coaching journey took a notable turn when he joined Gary Blair at Texas A&M and spent nine years as associate head coach from 2003 to 2012. Schaefer led the program to win two Big 12 Tournament titles and a regular conference title. He was also a part of the coaching staff that won the National Championship in 2011. However, after nine years, he decided to join Mississippi State where he turned the program into a national power and led them to back-to-back national championship games in 2017 and 2018. Schaefer was also honored Naismith women’s college Coach of the Year in 2018 and led the Bulldogs to a 221-62 overall record in eight seasons with the program. In 2020, he left Mississippi to fulfill his dream coaching job in Austin for the Texas Longhorns. Last season under Schaefer, Texas won the Big 12 Tournament Championship, marking their third successive conference championship.
