Vic Schaefer Coaching History

Schaefer began his coaching journey as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State in 1987 before earning his promotion to the head coaching role in 1990. He served as the head women's coach at Sam Houston State from 1990-97. In 1997, he joined the Arkansas women’s basketball program as an assistant coach followed by a three-year run as an associate head coach from 2000-2003.

Vic Schaefer then joined Gary Blair at Texas A&M where he spent nine years as associate head coach from 2003 to 2012. He helped the program win two Big 12 Tournament titles and a regular conference title. In 2012, he joined the Mississippi State program where he turned them into a national power and led them to back-to-back national championship games in 2017 and 2018. He was also named Naismith women’s college Coach of the Year in 2018 and led the Bulldogs to a 221-62 overall record. Schaefer earned his dream coaching job in Austin for the Texas Longhorns in 2020 and couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Under Schaefer, Texas won the Big 12 Tournament Championship in the 2023-24 season, marking their third successive conference title.
