The new college basketball season is just a few months away and Kim Mulkey's LSU Tigers is hard at work preparing for the challenges ahead. After the summer break, the players returned to the campus for training this week.
On Wednesday, LSU shared a clip from the facility that showed Mulkey closely monitoring and providing guidance on proper defensive positioning.
"Day 1: Building the foundation," the caption read.
The video begins with the three-time AP Coach of the Year talking to the players at the Lady Tigers Basketball Practice Facility in Baton Rouge.
"This Z-drill is basically how all of you are going to defend, okay?" Mulkey said. "Every day you gonna stretch and you gonna go straight to a goal and do 50 shots."
Mulkey then pointed at LSU's star player Flau'jae Johnson, encouraging other players to observe and learn from the 5-foot-10 guard.
"She never stops moving her feet. When that ball is in the air, she's stepping into her shot and she's going right back to jogging. Step into your shot," Mulkey said.
In the first day session, the returning players from last season were joined by three new faces Kim Mulkey signed from the transfer portal this offseason. These are: Mjracle Sheppard, Shayeann Day-Wilson and Kailyn Gilbert, along with a freshman recruit, Jada Richard.
"We could not be more excited to add Shayeann, Kailyn and Mjracle to the LSU family," Mulkey said in April. "The three of them will add a combination of experience and depth on the perimeter for us and will bolster our roster to continue to compete at an elite level."
Kim Mulkey-led LSU set to welcome three top prospects
Kim Mulkey, a four-time national champion coach, was not satisfied with the Tigers' performance last season. They were eliminated from the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament by Caitlin Clark-inspired Iowa.
Mulkey and her staff want to dominate women's college basketball in the upcoming season and the future. As the recruiting weekend started, LSU is set to host three top recruits in the country: Divine Bourrage (No. 5), ZaKiyah Johnson (No. 7) and Grace Knox (No. 8).
It would be a huge boost for Kim Mulkey and her future plans for LSU if any of the three commit to the program. However, No commitment would be more significant than the one from Aaliyah Chavez, the top-ranked player in the country. In July, Chavez included the Tigers in the list of her shortlisted six schools.
