Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self missed the first game of the NCAA Tournament for the defending champions.
It did not matter as No. 1 seed Kansas rolled past No. 16 seed Howard 96-68 on Thursday.
Self missed the game as he recovers from a recent hospital stay during which he underwent a heart catheterization.
Assistant coach Norm Roberts continues to be the interim coach in his place.
Self is with the team and continues to participate in practice on a limited basis. There is no word yet on whether he will return to the sidelines in Kansas’ second-round matchup on Saturday.
Self led the Jayhawks to the national title in 2022. It was his second national championship as a coach. He has led teams to four Final Four appearances. He is the seventh coach since 1985 to win multiple national championships.
The Kansas legend has a 55-21 record in the NCAA Tournament and possesses an astounding 577-129 record at Kansas.
He holds a 784-234 overall career record as a college basketball head coach.
Self started with the Jayhawks in 2003 after stops at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.
His Jayhawks teams have won a stunning 17 Big 12 regular-season titles, including a record 14 straight.
The winning does not stop there, as he won four conference titles at his previous stops before Kansas.
His Kansas team has never finished worse than third in the Big 12 standings. His program at Kansas once held a 69-game winning streak at home at the historic Phog Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
Self also cut down the nets nine times in Big 12 Conference tournaments.
Self will not get the credit for the first-round win on Thursday, but Self has only lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament twice in his career. He has made the tournament in 24 straight years. He has made it to at least the second round in every tournament since 2006.
