The UConn Huskies are the most successful men’s college basketball team in recent years. The organization lifted back-to-back NCAA titles this year, making it the first to do so since Florida in 2007. A three-peat could make them the best program of modern-day men's college basketball.

Nevertheless, head coach Dan Hurley faces several challenges as the roster lost four of its core players transition to the NBA. Moreover, a potential conference shift hovered over the program when the Big 12 thrived to add the basketball powerhouse to its lineup.

However, the change did not materialize and Connecticut remains a part of the Big East Conference for the majority of its sports. Their ice hockey team is part of the Hockey East conference while their football roster competes in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

UConn's conference history

UConn was part of the New England Conference and won multiple conference championships from 1923 to 1946. The program then joined the freshly founded Yankee Conference and won over 15 conference championships till the late '70s.

The Connecticut Huskies then became one of the core teams to form the Big East Conference when it was founded in 1979. However, the conference was split into two in 2013 due to instability caused by the mix of football and non-football schools. Huskies chose to stay with the football-oriented conference from the separation, making it an American Athletic Conference school.

The Huskies saw a massive decline in its athletic department revenues in the coming years. However, UConn was reported to consider rejoining as a Big East member and leaving the AAC around 2018. The next year, Storrs became part of the new Big East on July 1, 2020.

Which conference did Uconn play for before joining the Big East?

The UConn Huskies played in the AAC (American Athletic Conference) before becoming a part of the new Big East in 2020. They were in the AAC for seven years and started their journey with a 9-0 run, losing in the conference championship game before winning their fourth NCAA title in 2014.

However, they failed to dominate the conference in the coming years. Even though they won the AAC championship in their third year, the program went through a huge decline in terms of quality and performance. Three of their AAC seasons resulted in losing campaigns as they could not garner an NCAA invite in the succeeding year to their fourth title.

Hurley and Co. will look to script history and win their third consecutive NCAA title – and seventh overall – next season.
