Top 10 undefeated FBS teams entering Week 9

#1, No. 1 Oregon (7-0)

With the then-top-ranked Texas Longhorns dropping to the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend, Oregon took over the No. 1 ranking in college football. It's coming off a dominating 35-0 beatdown of Purdue, but its season has been highlighted by its victory over then-No. 2 Ohio State in Week 7.

The Ducks, who are 4-0 in the Big Ten, will continue their path to the conference championship by taking on No. 22 Illinois (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) at home on Saturday.

#2, No. 3 Penn State (6-0)

The Penn State Nittany Lions are coming off a thrilling 33-30 overtime victory over the USC Trojans. James Franklin's tenure has been filled with criticism for his performance in big games but is now positioning himself excellently to make the postseason on the backs of quarterback Drew Allar on offense and a vicious pass rush on defense.

#3, No. 6 Miami (7-0)

Cam Ward continues to find ways to raise his draft stock, delivering a win to the Hurricanes in a 52-45 victory over the Louisville Cardinals. Miami's range of outcomes is wide. On one hand, it can be considered a threat to become the No. 1 team. However, the schedule it has ahead of it is not very difficult, so even just one loss can push it out of the playoffs entirely.

#4, No. 10 Iowa State (7-0)

The Iowa State Cyclones have gone largely under the radar this season but have been a consistent force in the Big 12. Matt Campbell has done an excellent job delivering winning football in his tenure but is having his best start to this point. The Cyclones are coming off a 38-35 thriller over UCF and will be getting ready for Texas Tech.

#5, No. 11 BYU (7-0)

After a shaky start, the BYU Cougars have found their place in the Big 12 and have several ranked wins in their back pocket in Kansas State and SMU. Although they beat the reeling Oklahoma State Cowboys in a 38-35 shootout, they have stacked several excellent defensive performances.

#6, No. 13 Indiana (7-0)

Curt Cignetti has completely shifted the culture of the Indiana Hoosiers and has transformed them into one of the top teams in the Big Ten and a legitimate threat to make the playoffs. They crushed the Nebraska Cornhuskers 56-7 and will look to stay undefeated against the Washington Huskies.

#7, No. 19 Pittsburgh (6-0)

The Panthers won an abysmal three games last season but have already doubled that this season without putting up a loss with the help of redshirt freshman Eli Holstein. They are coming off an open week and will face the Syracuse Orange.

#8, No. 23 Army (7-0)

Army's winning streak is at 11 games going back to last season. Bryson Daily continues to develop as one of college football's premier stories with his dual-threat ability. If Army can get to No. 23 Notre Dame later in their season, then we can start to have a real conversation about them being in the bracket.

#9, No. 24 Navy (6-0)

Right behind Army is its rival, Navy, which is also undefeated. It, too, will take on Notre Dame, doing so on Saturday. If it can get past Notre Dame, its schedule is easy, and it could be well-positioned for an undefeated season.

#10, Liberty (5-0)

This is the Liberty Flames' second season starting 5-0. They entered the year as one of the Group of Five programs that could take a spot in the 2024 College Football Playoff, a battle that they can still win if they stay undefeated. They need No. 17 Boise State (5-1) to slip up.
