Following the elimination of the Bowl Championship Series and BCS National Championship Game in 2014, a post-season bowl game known as the College Football Playoff National Championship has been held.

In place of the Bowl Championship Series and its associated BCS National Championship Game, the College Football Playoff is a bracket tournament that culminates in a game between the nation's top four teams as chosen by a selection committee.

Two semifinal games—sometimes referred to as the "Plus-One system"—hosted by an annual cycle of bowl games known as the New Year's Six determine which teams advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship. As a result, unlike the BCS National Championship Game, the teams that compete in the final are not chosen by a selection committee.

Similar to the NCAA Final Four and Super Bowl, bids from potential host cities select the game's neutral location. The playoff organisers specified in their announcement that bids would be accepted for the 2016 and 2017 title games, that the proposed venues must have a minimum seating capacity of 65,000, and that towns would not be able to host both the title game and a semi-final game in the same year.

2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Winner

The 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship was won by the Clemson Tigers (CU).

Clemson became the 2017 national champions by exacting revenge on Alabama, the team that had defeated them in the championship game the year before. At Raymond James Stadium, in front of 74,512 amazed fans, the Tigers pulled off a stunning 35-31 victory in dramatic fashion. Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow became a cult hero after he scored a touchdown in the final seconds to win Clemson its first national championship since 1981.

Clemson's victory over Alabama in the 2017 College Football National Championship insured that the nation's top team after the regular season had not won a national championship since the College Football Playoff format's debut.

The previous year, the Crimson Tide, who were rated second, defeated the No. 1 Tigers, while Ohio State, who was placed fourth, won the first-ever CFP four-team tournament. The Tigers overcame an early 14-0 hole to win the game 35–31 on a game-winning touchdown with one second remaining.

Deshaun Watson, the quarterback for Clemson and a Heisman finalist, broke his personal record of 405 yards set in the 2016 National Title Game by throwing for 420 yards in the title game. Ben Boulware and Deshaun Watson were chosen as the Most Valuable Defensive and Offensive Players, respectively.

College Football Playoff Format

The Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl are among the six prestigious bowl games that are played in the College Football Playoff (CFP).

These games are arranged in three-year cycles and have combinations like fiesta/peach, orange/cotton, and rose/sugar. The playoff structure is a four-team knockout bracket, which will be in force until the end of the 2023 season.

Traditionally competed on New Year's Day, the New Year's Six consists of the semifinal bowls plus four additional bowls. In order to increase viewership, some games that were initially slated for New Year's Eve were instead rescheduled for December.

The selection committee seeds the top four teams in addition to allocating teams to at-large bowls. Since there is no cap on the number of opponents from each league, the No. 1 seed's discretion in choosing its bowl game is meant to avoid an unfavorable "road."

2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Venue

The 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship was held at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The University of South Florida (USF) Bulls collegiate football team and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL) play their home games at Raymond James Stadium, which opened in 1998.

The majority of athletic events there have a seating capacity of 69,218; however, with the addition of temporary seating, this number can be increased to about 75,000 for exceptional events. Tampa Stadium was replaced by Raymond James Stadium, which was constructed at public expense and is well-known for the miniature pirate ship that is situated behind the north-end zone seating section.

The stadium's naming rights have been owned by Tampa Bay-based financial services company Raymond James Financial for the entirety of the stadium's existence.
