The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), which started play in the 2014 college football season, uses the College Football Playoff National Championship, a post-season bowl game, to crown its national champion.
As the replacement for the Bowl Championship Series and the BCS National Championship Game, the College Football Playoff is a bracket tournament that pits the top four teams in the nation as decided by a selection committee. The game serves as the playoff final.
The Dr. Pepper-sponsored College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy is given to the game's winner. Officials wanted a new trophy that had nothing to do with the old BCS championship system, so they constructed it as a new championship trophy instead of the "crystal football" that the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) had been awarding since 1986.
Ohio State prevailed in the game's debut, which took place on January 12, 2015, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Not until January 2020, when LSU won the sixth edition of the game, did a top-ranked team win the College Football Playoff National Championship. Alabama has six appearances in the College Football Playoff National Championship and three wins.
It should be noted that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) does not award the College Football Playoff National Championship. The Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) is the highest division of college football in which championships are awarded by the NCAA.
2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Winner
The 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship was won by the Geogia Bulldogs (UGA).
One of the best teams in the sport's legendary history will be the Georgia Bulldogs team that captured the College Football National Championship on January 10, 2022. The Bulldogs defeated Alabama in Lucas Oil Stadium, ending more than 40 years of suffering for team fans and setting numerous NCAA and College Football Playoff records.
Georgia's first college football national championship since 1980 came in 2022. Four years without a Bulldog appearance in the Final Four, and that streak ended with only making it to the CFP. Kirby Smart's team became the first team to finish third in the final CFP rankings to win a national title as they easily defeated Alabama 33–18 in the title match.
In football, there is an old proverb that states, "Defense wins championships, offense wins games." The 2022 Georgia Bulldogs, who won the College Football National Championship, are the subject of a cliche that has never been more fitting.
They were an overpowering defensive force, stacked from front to back with exceptional playmakers. Their line-up of Devonte Wyatt, Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Travon Walker, and Nolan Smith would set the standard for incredible athleticism on the defensive line.
Nakobe Dean and Channing Tindall, the star names who were as dominant in coverage as they were explosive into the backfield, were part of the linebacker rotation that followed them. Over Athens and every other stadium where the Bulldogs defense set up shop, Derion Kendrick, Kelee Ringo, and the dangerously explosive Lewis Cine formed a no-fly zone.
Everyone was certain that they had seen a defensive unit that equaled the likes of Alabama's 2011 defense, the Miami Hurricanes unit of 2001, the 1993 FSU team, and the Clemson "Power Rangers" led defense from 2018. Ringo's game-winning interception for a touchdown in the 2022 College Football National Championship Game confirmed this.
College Football Playoff Format
A four-team knockout bracket has been utilised by the College Football Playoff to choose the national champion since its establishment in 2014 and will remain in place until the end of the 2023 season.
The semi-finals are hosted alternately by six bowl games: the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Peach Bowl. The following combinations are part of the rotation, which is based on a three-year cycle: fiesta/peach, orange/cotton, and rose/sugar.
The New Year's Six are the four top-tier bowls and the two semifinal bowls. The Rose and Sugar Bowls are always held on New Year's Day, per contract. At first, there were six games in total—three on New Year's Eve and three on New Year's Day.
However, games that were initially scheduled for New Year's Eve were shifted to as early as December 27 in several years due to poor TV ratings in the first rotation. In addition to assigning teams to the at-large bowls (Cotton, Fiesta, and Peach) in years when they do not host the semifinals, the selection committee seeds the top four teams.
In the four-team format, the top-ranked team plays the bottom-ranked team, and vice versa. In order to avoid playing in a "road" setting, the No. 1 seed selects its bowl game, which sets the semifinal bowl game allotted to each opponent. The maximum number of teams in each conference is uncapped.
2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Venue
The location of the eighth College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship was revealed on November 1, 2017, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The College Football Playoff National Championship was held in eight different cities, with Indianapolis being the first "cold-weather city" (following Arlington, Glendale, Tampa, Atlanta, Santa Clara, New Orleans, and Miami Gardens).
Moreover, this was the first national championship in modern college football history not to be won in the South or the West. The College Football Playoff specifically asked Indianapolis to submit a bid for the 2022 tournament, and the city was chosen when it accepted the invitation to do so.
Mark Howell, CEO of Angie's List (now Angi), an Indianapolis-based corporation, presided over the host committee. Lucas Oil Stadium has hosted the Big Ten Football Championship Game since 2011, Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, Final Fours in 2010, 2015, and 2021, and it was the site of the first college football national championship. However, the stadium is home to the Indianapolis Colts and has been their home field since 2008.
