If you blinked, you might have missed him against the Texas Longhorns, but Jeremiah Smith of the Ohio State Buckeyes remains college football's next superstar. Sure, he had just one catch for three yards in the Buckeyes' win over Texas. But the true freshman has already proven his bona fides. Even in a program that has featured top talent, players like Smith don't come along every day.
In a freshman season to remember, Smith has 71 receptions for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. His season places him ninth in receptions, fifth in receiving yards and tied for second in receiving touchdowns in Ohio State's illustrious record book. And for a mere freshman to pile up such statistics?
Here's why Smith might be just getting started.
3 reasons why Jeremiah Smith is next college football megastar
#3. Ohio State combines freedom and support
Over the years, from Maurice Clarett to Treyveon Henderson to Smith, Ohio State hasn't had any qualms about putting top freshmen in position to shine. But where Ohio State differs from most programs is the combination of opportunity and support.
For instance, Smith had a rare off game against Texas, due in large part to the Longhorns' excellent coverage scheme. But rather than having to force the ball to Smith, Ohio State could rely on Carnell Tate and Emeka Egbuka to make plays.
The Buckeyes promise to keep some of the best players in the nation. Smith won't have to deal with having a subpar quarterback or a poor offensive line or having to play opposite a bad defense. Ohio State gives a young star like Smith the perfect mixture of opportunity and support.
#2. Smith's big-play skills
One of the first things that stands out for Smith is how many big plays he makes. His 17.3 yards per catch demonstrates the explosiveness of his game. With Smith as the deep ball threat, Ohio State has shone on big plays. OSU leads the Big Ten in passing plays covering 20+ yards (54, tied with Penn State), 30+ yards (27), 40+ yards (14), 50+ yards (eight) and 60+ yards (five).
Smith himself caught five of the 50+ yard bombs and eight of the 40+ yard plays. Ohio State can beat opponents in any direction, be it a patient ground game or deep plays. But Smith, between his own superb quick-strike skills and the defensive attention he gathers, opens up the offense to a whole other level.
#1. Buckeyes may be primed for a dynasty
Ohio State will be a substantial favorite to beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and claim the CFP title. Given the excellent of Ryan Day's Buckeyes in both high school and transfer portal recruiting, it's not unreasonable to think that the new CFP opens up an era of Ohio State dominance.
Smith's team doesn't have to be great for him to be great. But consider a situation like, say, Tetairoa McMillan in 2024 with 4-8 Arizona. It's not as if McMillan didn't have plenty of moments. But on a mediocre team, even the brightest of stars lose some luster. Suffice it to say, that won't be a problem for Smith.
