The ACC Media Days 2024 begin on Monday afternoon, and there will be a lot of questions regarding conference realignment for ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips. With the state of the Atlantic Coast Conference being pretty weak, let's take a look at some of the realignment questions that he can be asked by the assembled media.
Conference realignment questions for ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips
#1 Are the Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers part of the ACC's future?
This may be the most pressing question for the ACC in terms of conference realignment. The Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles are each involved in a legal battle with the Atlantic Coast Conference, so Phillips may be limited in what he can say about the topic.
However, it is something for him to answer, as it tells how the conference feels about the two programs right now.
#2 Are there any plans for adding teams in conference realignment?
If there are any concerns about how the legal battle winds up, there is the potential of a mass exodus from the conference, similar to what was seen with the Pac-12. To avoid a re-negotiation clause in its media rights contract with ESPN, the Atlantic Coast Conference needs to remain above a specific number of teams in the conference.
It was one of the reasons why the ACC added the Stanford Cardinal, California Golden Bears and SMU Mustangs. This is something that could continue to happen to keep the number of programs up and avoid a lesser deal.
#3 Does conference realignment hurt the ACC in your opinion?
The world of conference realignment has made things a lot more intriguing in college sports. It has left some power conferences stronger while completely wiping out what we knew of other conferences.
It will be intriguing to hear how commissioner Jim Phillips feels about the subject, as some Atlantic Coast Conference members might be poached by the Big Ten and Big 12. The ACC is reportedly looking at Group of Five conferences to keep its numbers up.
Other questions could be asked, but these seem to be the most pressing at this point.
