Alabama is rolling into fall practice in new coach Kalen DeBoer's first season in Tuscaloosa. While the Tide have some of the best players in the nation, even at Alabama, there are some uncertainties. Fall camp will have more work than just fully instituting DeBoer's system. Here are three position battles that the Tide are still working out heading into the 2024 season.
3 most intriguing position battles at Alabama's fall camp
#1.CB2
The Tide actually lost both cornerbacks from last season, 1st round NFL draft pick Terrion Arnold and 2nd round pick Kool-Aid McKinstry. That said, the Tide nabbed transfer Domani Jackson from USC, where he started 11 games last year. Jackson seems to have first dibs on CB1, but the Tide still have to figure out who their other corner starter is.
Junior Wake Forest transfer DaShawn Jones is the expeirenced choice. Jones started 11 games over the last two seasons at Wake, making 60 tackles and breaking up seven passes. The most talented option is probably true freshman Zabien Brown. A five-star recruit, Brown was the nation's No. 3 ranked CB prospect in the 2024 class from 247sports.
Fellow five-star Jaylen Mbakwe was the No. 2 CB in that class, but Brown went through spring practice. It'll be interesting to see how Alabama elects to decide.
#2. Right tackle
Alabama brought transfer Kadyn Proctor back from Iowa and he's the likely left tackle starter for 2024. But Alabama still needs a right tackle to fill JC Latham's spot. Alabama has several talented possibilities, but none with a ton of experience.
Freshmen Wilkin Formby and Miles McVay had a few snaps last season, meanwhile sophomore Elijah Pritchett played in all 14 games last season. Pritchett's experience will be difficult to overcome, so he has to be considered the likely eventual starter at right tackle, pending something amazing from one of the freshmen.
#3. Outside linebacker
Alabama lost outstanding outside backers Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell after 2023. While the Tide are basically set at middle linebacker with returnees Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell, there will be a battle at the Wolf linebacker spot.
The solid veteran choice is senior Quandarrius Robinson. Robinson had 24 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss last season as a reserve. Alabama has other options, but they're basically all inexperienced. Freshmen Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre as well as junior Keanu Koht are all highly regarded prospects. But all have less experience than Robinson.
Defensive coordinator Kane Womack will probably go with experience in Robinson. But the younger players could end up seeing additional time and perhaps even claim the starting job late in the year.
