The Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 23-10 on Thursday in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, advancing to the College Football Playoff Semifinals. They have been able to do so without much pressure, but there are going to be key players who will be required to step up if the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going to be able to win the national championship.

Let's take a closer look at some of the most significant players for the Fighting Irish to win the championship this season.

Most Important Notre Dame players for national championship

QB Riley Leonard

The most important position in football is the quarterback, so that means Riley Leonard is going to be impactful. He was not asked to do too much in the CFP Quarterfinals but has not looked too sharp either as he has gone 38-of-56 (67.9%) for 291 yards with two passing touchdowns to one interception in the CFP.

However, it is not only his passing that is important but also his ability to use his leg. Leonard also has 25 carries for 110 yards and a rushing touchdown in the two CFP games, but coach Marcus Freeman does tend to call on him to run the ball on 4th and short situations.

RB Jeremiyah Love

Arguably their most skilled player on the roster, sophomore running back Jeremiyah Love is a significant piece for the Fighting Irish to make the national championship. He has recorded 18 total touchdowns (16 rushing, two receiving) this season and has a nose for the end zone.

His rushing attack is going to open up the game for Leonard's passing to take that next step and continue to run the clock out if needed as well as extend drives. His performance is critical for the success of Notre Dame going forward.

S Xavier Watts

There are a few defensive players that could be highlighted, but senior safety Xavier Watts is the leader of the defense. He has six interceptions and eight pass deflections on the season so he can dominate in coverage.

Watts is also a skilled tackler, with 17 total tackles in the College Football Playoff. With his ability to defend at a great level, it is going to keep the opposing offense trying to keep the ball away from him instead of targeting him.

Up next, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play Penn State on Jan. 9 in the Orange Bowl. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
