3 reasons why ACC teams joining Big 12 expansion

The Big 12 expansion plan is set to make some groundbreaking changes in the world of college football. The conference is reportedly in discussion with a host of teams in the ACC over possible realignment amid chaos within the league.

While there are still some things that could prevent this from happening, it is bound to change the landscape as we know it. Without a doubt, the outcome of the ongoing legal battle within the ACC will have much to do with how this eventually turns out.

With Brett Yormark working to improve the place of his conference, here’s a look at how the Big 12 expansion involving ACC teams will create a seismic shift in college football.

Three reasons the Big 12 expansion will ensure groundbreaking changes in college football

1. A stronger Big 12

Should the Big 12 successfully lure away top ACC teams like Clemson and Florida State, the conference will undoubtedly become stronger. Without a doubt, it’s currently far behind the SEC and the Big Ten in terms of team quality; but the ACC schools can help close the gap.

The Big 12 expansion moves have paid off in the last couple of years, ensuring it survived the existential threat arising from the exit of Texas and Oklahoma.

2. Collapse of the ACC

Should the Big 12 successfully add the likes of Clemson and Florida State to its roster, this could mean the end of the ACC.

Top teams like the Tigers and the Seminoles contributed largely to the value of the conference, and their presence is a huge factor for its viability. Their exit could see the ACC suffer a similar fate to the Pac-12, resulting in an implosion that will lead many schools out of the door.

3. A future dominated by ‘Power Three’

The "Power Five" used to be a group with the most notable conferences in the world of college football. However, the realignment has shrunk that to “Power Four.” With Big 12's expansion plans underway, a future with just a “Power Three” now looks likely.

The SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 might be the only power conferences left in college football should the Big 12 successfully lure away the likes of Clemson and Florida State from the ACC. This will undoubtedly create a brutally competitive landscape where only the fittest can survive.
