Heading into the 2024 Heisman Trophy Ceremony, it did not seem likely that No. 9-ranked Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty would walk away with the Heisman Trophy. The consensus heading into the ceremony was that No. 23-ranked Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter would win the award.

That proved true as Hunter won the Award over Jeanty, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel. However, many felt Jeanty was robbed of the award and should have won. They believe Hunter won because of the extra media attention he received playing for Colorado under Coach Prime.

3 reasons Ashton Jeanty should have won the Heisman Trophy

Travis Hunter was expected to run away with the Heisman Trophy voting, but that was not the case. Hunter won with 2231 points and 552 first-place votes compared to Ashton Jeanty who had 2017 points and 309 first-place votes. The other finalists, Dillon Gabriel and Cam Ward, had 30 first-place votes combined.

Since the vote ended up being closer than anticipated, some fans believe Jeanty was robbed of the award. Here are three reasons why he should have won the Heisman Trophy.

#1 He had an all-time great rushing season

Most people believe Ashton Jeanty should have won the Heisman as he had one of the best rushing seasons in college football history. He had 2497 rushing yards, which places him fourth all-time in single-season rushing yards. He is less than 150 yards behind the record, 2628, set by Barry Sanders in 1988.

#2 Boise State won the Mountain West Championship

The Heisman Trophy almost always goes to a player who helps his team succeed. While the Colorado Buffaloes had a good season and were much improved from last year, they did not qualify for the Big 12 Championship Game or the College Football Playoff.

Conversely, Jeanty's Broncos won the Mountain West Championship and qualified for the College Football Playoff. They even earned a bye through the first round. They did this largely because of Jeanty's play.

#3 Jeanty was the best player at his position

There is no question that Jeanty was the best running back in college football this season. Conversely, while Hunter was elite as a wide receiver and cornerback, he won the award because he was excellent on both sides of the field. However, there is an argument he was not the best player in either position.
